The year 1942 is said to have been Australia's "year of fear". Vulnerable Sydney was attacked by the Japanese and doom, gloom and uncertainty descended onthe country like a sodden rag.
That was the year that Bunty, the author's mother, died leaving her husband Barry with two tiny children to care for. He was court-martialled by the Army for desertion, but was discharged when, taking his babies with him, he presented for duty.
These inter-related vignettes tell of the difficulties and tensions that arose in the complex web of family dynamics. The fragile integration of the children into their new families was beset by religious conflict, mistrust, jealousy and unresolved grief. Emotional scars followed the children into adulthood.
